A shareholder, also referred to as a stockholder, is an individual or institution that legally owns one or more shares of stock in a public or private corporation. Shareholders can exercise certain rights pertaining to the company’s management, receive dividends, and are granted eligibility to vote on the company’s affairs, including the election of the board of directors.
